Israel has approved its first regulated Shekel stablecoin, marking a controlled step into fiat-backed digital assets after two years of testing under a regulatory sandbox.

The approval allows crypto firm Bits of Gold to issue BILS, a token pegged 1:1 to the Israeli Shekel and backed by reserves held in local bank accounts. The move signals a shift from policy experimentation toward real-world deployment, while maintaining tight oversight of issuance and redemption.

From sandbox testing to limited rollout

The stablecoin was developed and tested as part of a two-year pilot supervised by Israel’s Capital Market Authority. During this period, the authority evaluated the system for operational resilience, compliance, and market behavior.

Part of the testing included blockchain infrastructure trials, with several reports pointing to integration on Solana. This suggests the project explored scalability and transaction efficiency before receiving approval.

The transition from sandbox to live issuance remains cautious. The regulator has authorized a limited rollout, meaning BILS will not immediately operate at full scale. Instead, the launch will expand gradually as compliance and operational benchmarks are met.

Strict reserve and compliance requirements

Under the approval terms, the BILS stablecoin must be fully backed by fiat reserves held in segregated accounts within Israel. The company cannot mix these funds with others of its assets, reducing counterparty risk and improving transparency.

Bits of Gold must also ensure continuous liquidity and redemption capabilities. Users must be able to convert the token back into Shekels under defined conditions, a key safeguard that aligns with global stablecoin standards.

Additional obligations include ongoing reporting to regulators, disclosure of material changes, and adherence to cybersecurity and custody requirements. These controls position the project closer to regulated financial infrastructure than to typical crypto token launches.

Not a central bank digital currency

The approval has drawn attention partly because of confusion with Israel’s broader digital currency plans. However, the Shekel stablecoin approved here is not a central bank digital currency.

The Bank of Israel continues to explore a digital Shekel as a potential future payment system, but it has not confirmed an official launch yet. In contrast, BILS is a privately issued asset operating under regulatory supervision, not a direct liability of the central bank.

This distinction matters for users and institutions. A private stablecoin carries different risk assumptions and governance structures than a CBDC, even when both are denominated in the same national currency.

Bringing a local currency on-chain

The introduction of a regulated Shekel stablecoin places Israel among a growing number of jurisdictions experimenting with tokenized versions of fiat currencies.

While U.S. dollar-backed stablecoins dominate global markets, local currency stablecoins can address specific regional needs, including domestic payments, settlement efficiency, and integration with local financial systems.

In Israel’s case, the controlled rollout suggests regulators are prioritizing stability over rapid expansion. By limiting issuance and enforcing strict reserve management, authorities appear focused on minimizing systemic risk while still enabling innovation.

>>> Read more: Western Union Targets May USDPT Stablecoin Launch on Solana

What comes next

The long-term impact of the Shekel stablecoin will depend on adoption, integration, and regulatory evolution. If BILS proves reliable in real-world use, it could pave the way for broader stablecoin frameworks in Israel.

At the same time, its development runs parallel to the central bank’s exploration of a digital Shekel, creating a dual-track approach to digital currency innovation.

For now, Israel’s decision reflects a measured strategy. It allows private-sector experimentation with fiat-backed tokens, while keeping tight regulatory control over how those assets enter the financial system.

In one of the most politically charged hacks of a crypto platform to date, Iran’s largest digital asset exchange, Nobitex, has fallen victim to a sophisticated cyberattack. The perpetrators, a group identifying themselves as Predatory Sparrow, claim to have stolen and destroyed over $90 million in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT. Simultaneously, they wiped servers and leaked internal documents.

The Nobitex breach is far more than a criminal exploit. It is a flashpoint in a growing cyber war that increasingly treats cryptocurrency as both target and weapon. From geopolitical sabotage to cybersecurity lapses and state-imposed regulation, the incident is a case study of crypto infrastructure’s vulnerabilities when under pressure from global conflict.

Inside the Nobitex Hack: The Heist That Shook Iran’s Crypto Sector

The breach occurred in mid-June 2025. Predatory Sparrow, a group long suspected of Israeli affiliations, claimed responsibility for the incident.

The hackers’ operation was not limited to digital theft. According to blockchain analytics firms like Elliptic and Chainalysis, the group drained tens of millions in assets before deliberately destroying wallets and backend systems.

What sets the Predatory Sparrow cyberattack apart is the hybrid nature of the assault. It combined financial theft, infrastructure sabotage, and the strategic release of sensitive Nobitex communications.

On-chain data confirms that stolen assets include Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether. Forensic tracing suggests a coordinated withdrawal pattern designed to bypass Iran’s internal surveillance and capital controls.

8 burn addresses burned $90M from the wallets of the regime's favorite sanctions violation tool, Nobitex.

12 hours from now
The source-code of Nobitex will be open to the public, and Nobitex’s walled garden will be without walls.
Cyber Warfare by Proxy: Crypto’s Role in the Israel-Iran Standoff

In a public statement, Predatory Sparrow accused the Iranian regime of financing terrorism and claimed their actions were in retaliation. Analysts widely interpret this as a clear escalation in the Israel-Iran cyber conflict, following a series of attacks on fuel distribution systems, steel plants, and defense infrastructure in recent years.

Cryptocurrency platforms like Nobitex are increasingly seen as strategic targets, not merely for financial gain, but for their symbolic and practical roles in national economies. The Iran crypto exchange hack may represent a broader evolution in modern cyber warfare. We witness the weaponization of decentralized financial systems by state-linked actors.

>>> Read more: Crypto Investor Loses $6.9M in Douyin Cold Wallet Scam

Iran Responds with Regulation: Crypto Curfews and Centralized Oversight

Following the Nobitex hack, Iranian regulators imposed strict measures to restore control over digital platforms and user activity. Iranian authorities implemented a so-called crypto curfew, restricting trading hours on exchanges and intensifying surveillance requirements.

The Central Bank of Iran and other regulators have ordered Nobitex and its competitors to submit detailed logs, user data, and revised security protocols.

While officials claim these measures are essential for national security, critics argue that the response penalizes users. It also ignores the underlying cybersecurity failures that enabled the breach. This aggressive stance underscores a shift in Iranian crypto regulation, prioritizing state surveillance over decentralized principles.

Security Gaps and a Fragile Infrastructure

Leaked internal messages, published by Predatory Sparrow, reveal glaring vulnerabilities in Nobitex’s security architecture.

The absence of robust cold storage protections, outdated server infrastructure, and potential conflicts of interest between Nobitex and Iranian authorities are now under scrutiny.

Experts warn that Iran’s sanctions environment has long made it difficult for exchanges like Nobitex to access modern cybersecurity tools. They were left exposed to state-grade cyberattacks.

The Nobitex security failure is a stark reminder that geopolitics doesn’t just impact markets—it can collapse platforms. The Nobitex case has become a cautionary tale for crypto exchange cybersecurity, especially in regions facing geopolitical strain.

Global Reaction and Strategic Implications

While global crypto markets remained relatively stable in the immediate aftermath, compliance experts are paying close attention.

Firms like Chainalysis and Elliptic are tracking the stolen funds and warning exchanges to bolster defenses.

The broader concern is conceptual: Can a crypto exchange in a sanctioned or authoritarian regime ever achieve true operational security? The geopolitical risk exposed by the Nobitex hack challenges the long-held notion that decentralized systems are immune to state interference.

Conclusion: Nobitex as a Geopolitical Fault Line

The $90 million crypto heist at Nobitex is more than a high-profile breach. It’s a multi-layered incident at the intersection of cyberwarfare, financial sovereignty, and digital authoritarianism.

>>> Read more: CertiK May Report: Social Engineering Drives 2025 Crypto Losses

As the Nobitex hack demonstrates, crypto exchanges are no longer just financial platforms. Crypto is firmly entrenched in the playbook of global conflict, and exchanges have become political targets in a digital battlefield. Platforms and users must reckon with a new reality: in today’s world, your wallet can be a target.

The Israeli Blockchain Organization just released its third startup map. It clearly shows that currently there are more than 200 local blockchain companies, which automatically puts the country in the leading positions of blockchain developments worldwide.

The blockchain technology has been exploited in a vast range of businesses in the last two years. The platform, which supports currencies like the Bitcoin and the Ethereum, has been proven to be quite useful in many other aspects.

In the case of Israel, we do not talk about cryptocurrencies specifically, but for fintech companies (57 now) and protocols/ core Infrastructure fields, the official press release says. The security sector has also increased in blockchain utility, according to the statement, with 23 new startups.

The Israeli blockchain industry is currently experiencing both a boost and a transformation,

The Founding Partner of the Israeli Blockchain Association, Roman Gold said, quoted by the PR Wire,

On the one hand, we see unprecedented growth among blockchain startups, but on the other hand, many of them are skipping ICOs in favor of equity financing. Today there are fewer startup founders coming out of morally questionable markets, such as Forex, binary trading, and gambling. Instead, more institutional players are starting to enter the market. Thus, the market is going through self-purification.

But the blockchain industry in Israel is not completely successful, though. For the last year, 20 companies had to close their doors due to lack of knowledge how exactly to use the blockchain innovations and especially, the public ledger that usually goes with it.

It seems the Israeli blockchain progress is a result of governmental policy and adequate regulations of the market. Even the public sector implemented the blockchain for transmitting data safely, as CrispyBull recently wrote.

Israel has a good chance to strengthen its Startup Nation brand, as well as become the Blockchain Nation,

Gadi Isaev, a Managing Partner of the Israeli Blockchain Association, commented in the release.

This is happening thanks to effective regulation and the close cooperation of many blockchain startups with educational and academic research organizations.

Israeli Blockchain Organization’s next report will be posted on the first quarter of 2019. For the next year, the young entrepreneurs expect a more active collaboration between the private sector and the educational institutions.

He was detained on 31th of August 2017, Time of Israel reports, at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Georgia, en route from Paris to Austin, Texas, where he was supposed to attend an International beard and mustache championship.

Vallerius is accused of money laundering and drug trafficking. He was administrating the dark web platform Dream market, where he sold drugs like cocaine, heroin, marijuana and a range of opioids like oxycodone. The marketplace was launched in 2013 after the shutdown of the other big dark web bazaar Alphabay. Vallerius had delivered the illegal substances over the mail and mainly in the area of Florida. Payments were conducted with cryptocurrencies, primarily with Bitcoins and Bitcoin Cash. At the time of arrestment, the police seized more than 100 BTC and 121.95 BCH from Vallerius laptop, equivalent to about $700,000.

The accused narco baron had pleaded ‘guilty’ in the court of Southern Florida in June 2018. He tried to work for a reduction of the sentence by providing additional information. Yet, the data seems to not meet the criteria for such a reduction, the US District Judge Robert Scola said.

This is a very serious offense involving a huge amount of drugs.

The judge said on the hearing, quoted by the Israeli news portal.

He has lost everything,

His wife Yasmin Vallerius said on a letter, sent to the media, according to the French news outlet, Le Parisien.

Gal is a very caring person, very loving, and friendly with everybody, the devastated woman wrote. He is also a very fragile and sensitive man, who is now in a foreign country far away from any family members. His arrest has broken him mentally. He has lost everything.

Because of his triple citizenship, Vallerius might serve on an international scheme in the UK, France, and Israel. However, despite the harsh-seeming sentence, this is half of the time given for money laundering and drug dealing accusations.

This is the third case of dark web marketplaces disclosure for selling drugs and weapons. As CrispyBull reported, Gary Davis, connected to the Silk road case is also under trial, while his partner Ross Ulbricht was sentenced a life-long imprisonment. The case of Alphabay also ended badly for its initiator Alexandre Cazes who committed a suicide in Thailand last year.

The Israel Securities Authorities (ISA) announced on Wednesday that it will add another layer to its cybersecurity system, namely blockchain technology. The regulator is going to use the innovation to improve the safety and the legitimacy of the messages delivered between institutions.

The news, stated by the Times of Israel, says that ISA implemented in its system a new software called “Yael”. The government will utilize it to prove the credibility of the received messages. In this way, the human factor would be suspended, and no one would be able to dismiss the notifications, as well as they could not be corrupted, deleted, or falsified.

The Israeli regulator has already had a stable system of public supervision but works constantly on its improvement. The announcement says that the technology “adds another layer to ensuring the credibility of the information relayed to the supervised bodies”.

Yael system was developed for the last three months by the IT giant Taldor. ISA asserted proudly that:

Implementing blockchain technology in the ISA’s information systems makes it one of the global leading authorities in securing the information provided to the public and its credibility, and one of the leaders in Israel’s public sector.

Hence, this will not be the last blockchain project for the country. Israel expresses certainty that it will not miss the latest innovations and looks forward to using them in public area because

We are witnessing a growing trend around the world, and in the financial field, in particular, to embed innovative and revolutionary technologies,

Said the director of the ISA’s Information Systems Department, Natan Hershkovitz.

Israel works in using blockchain technology in at least two other directions – e-voting system and Magna, a recording system of all reports submitted to ISA.

It would be a surprise though since Brazil thinks about switching to an Ethereum-based electoral process and Estonia already uses blockchain e-voting.
